VOIP, 10GbE Markets Show Growth, Dell`Oro Group Says

The IP telephony market grew 10 percent in the third quarter, thanks to service providers investing in such infrastructure projects as VOIP for businesses, according to a report from DellOro Group. At the same time, the market for high-speed server connectivity also grew in the quarter, due in large part to the blade server market, DellOro said.

HP Gets Networking, Security, VOIP, China from 3Com Acquisition

Hewlett-Packard’s $2.7 billion bid for 3Com will enable HP to fill some holes in its ProCurve product portfolio as it continues to challenge Cisco Systems in the $40 billion networking space, and as the two sides collide in the burgeoning competition for converged data center solutions. According to some analysts, Cisco owned about 52 percent of the networking market, while HP and 3Com were a distant second and third, followed by a host of other vendors. Combined, HP and 3Com will have about 20 percent of the market, making it a solid No. 2 to Cisco. The deal also adds to HP’s unified communications story and gives it greater traction in the important Chinese market.

As part of its Patent Busting Project, the Electronic Frontier Foundation claims it has discovered a prior patent and published reference material that should invalidate a patent granted to Acceris for implementing VOIP using analog telephones as endpoints.

AT T is now allowing iPhone users to place VOIP calls over its wireless network, instead of just Wi-Fi. Will the move jam up an already busy network and force Apple and Google to play nice?

AT&T officially welcomes VoIP to 3G network

I mentioned yesterday that there were rumors flying that AT&T could be ready to allow VoIP over its 3G network with apps like Google Voice and Skype. Skype Plots Business VOIP Course with Cisco

Skype’s Skype for SIP software cleared its interoperability certification with the Cisco Unified Communications 500 Series for Small Business, the latest step in the VOIP provider’s plan to hedge into the market for business communications. Skype for SIP will help the company expand its revenue streams into enterprise markets, something it has been unable to do under the aegis of parent company eBay to date.

Google Voice, Skype Are on a VOIP Collision Course

News Analysis: Why would Google want to acquire Skype when it already has a VOIP application? The fact is, Google Voice and Skype are not yet direct competitors, but Google is enriching its application and could put it on a collision course with Skype. Google Voice could be linked with Google Talk to approximate Skype’s PC calling services. Google also offers video chat via Gmail, which could theoretically be added to any VOIP platform Google was considering.

Nortel Gains in Resurgent VOIP Market: Dell’Oro

Nortel Networks, which is selling off parts of its business as it tries to rebound after filing for bankruptcy earlier this year, was the top VOIP vendor in the second quarter, according to analyst firm DellOro Group. Smaller vendors also gained share, while some larger companies, including Huawei and Nokia Siemens, lost share. Overall, revenue in the VOIP space grew 7 percent from the first quarter.

IBM Lotus Foundations Reach Adds Instant Messaging, VOIP

IBM Lotus Foundations Reach brings VOIP, instant messaging, presence and several more messaging and collaboration tools to its Lotus Foundations Start appliance. The offerings are aimed at Microsoft’s Office, Small Business Server and Office Communications Server suites. IBM also created widgets to let users access LinkedIn and TripIt from Lotus Notes.
