8,000 Hungarians request citizenship

Over 8,000 ethnic Hungarians from Vojvodina, northern Serbian, have so far filed requests to be granted Hungarian citizenship. This has been confirmed by Hungarian Consul-General Tamas Korsos.

Vojvodina party wants Serb Radicals banned

The League of Vojvodina Social Democrats (LSV) on Monday once again requested that the Serb Radical Party (SRS) be banned.
LSV offcials noted that the Constitutional Court of Serbia should consider this option.

Vojvodina to open office in Brussels

Vojvodina will open its office in Brussels in the beginning of next year, earlier than originally planned. Agreement on this was reached Friday in Novi Sad by Vojvodina provincial government head Bojan Pajtić and Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić.

EP and Vojvodina jurisdiction transfer

The deputy speaker of the European Parliament (EP), Laszlo Tokes says EP representatives will monitor the transfer of jurisdiction from Serbia to Vojvodina.
“We will carry out the monitoring of the transfer of jurisdiction from the Republic to the Province, because autonomy must be fulfilled also with content,” Tokes said at a news conference after a meeting with the speaker of the Vojvodina assembly, Å andor EgereÅ¡i in Novi Sad on Thursday.

Vojvodina and Bavaria intensify cooperation

Cooperation and establishing of institutional ties within the Danube strategy were discussed by high officials of Vojvodina and Bavaria. The Bavarian delegation, headed by Bavarian State Minister for Federal and European Affairs Emilia Mueller, conferred with AP (Autonomous Province) Vojvodina Assembly Speaker Sandor Egreši, President of the AP Vojvodina Government Bojan Pajtić, Novi Sad Mayor Igor Pavličić and others.

North ready to combat toxic spill

The provincial administration is ready to take all appropriate measures if toxic spill from Hungary should threaten Vojvodina, in northern Serbia. The government of Vojvodina announced that the Provincial Inspectorate of Environmental Protection is prepared to produce, together with the Ministry of Environment, a timely response to the threat.

Official: No separatism in Vojvodina

Prime Minister of Vojvodina Bojan Pajtić believes the speculations about the “separatism” in Vojvodina are “utter nonsense.” “To mention the secession of Vojvodina would be no different than to claim there is an increasing separatism in Å umadija, which is utter nonsense,” Pajtić said.

Hungary backs ethnic council in Vojvodina

Hungarian PM has promised that his country will set aside funds to support the Hungarian National Council (NSM) in Serbia. “The Hungarian government will help NSM materially, as the highest organ of the cultural autonomy of Vojvodina’s Hungarians,” Orban said while visiting Palić, in northern Vojvodina.

SPO calls for urgent passing of restitution law

The Vojvodina provincial board of the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) called for an immediate passing of the restitution law. It also called for a prompt halting of the privatization of property that was appropriated by the state after World War II.

Vojvodina official on slow transfer of authority

Vojvodina Assembly Speaker Šandor Egereši has expressed his dissatisfaction over the slow transfer of authority from the state to provincial level. “In January my friends from the provincial administration told me that we would take over 154 new jurisdictions within half a year,” he stressed.

NGOs against plans for Vojvodina TV

Non-governmental organizations in Vojvodina are strongly protesting against a proposal to end the broadcast of the Radio Television Vojvodina (RTV).
“The idea is to make RTV one of ten or so regional radio-television stations functioning within the RTS system,” the Civil Vojvodina NGO said in a statement.

Vojvodina provincial official resigns

Vojvodina Provincial Secretary for Administration, Regulations and Ethnic Minorities Tomaš Korhec said today that he had tendered in his resignation. Koherc stated that he was resigning because he had “done everything in his power in the office and did not see what else he could achieve since he ran into walls and obstacles”, described as insurmountable.

“DS interferes in minority elections”

Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) leader Ištvan Pastor has accused the Democrats (DS) of interfering in elections for national minority councils. Pastor was quoted as saying on Tuesday that SVM suspects that there were “other (election) lists” that had behind them the ruling DS and the League of Social-Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV).

Anniversary of SRS rally in Vojvodina town

18 years ago today the Serb Radical Party (SRS) held a rally in the village of Hrtkovci in Vojvodina. Ethinic Croats from Vojvodina are associating this rally with the beginning of their persecution from the region of Srem in northern Serbia.

Vojvodina govt. chief meets with Japanese businesspeople

President of the Vojvodina government Bojan Pajtić was in Vienna presenting Vojvodina’s investments opportunities to Japanese businesspeople. “There is no doubt that in the coming months and years the number of Japanese investments in our region will increase. There is already a large number of interested companies,” Pajtić said.

“Special treatment” for Vojvodina officials

The Vojvodina assembly will request from the Anti-Corruption Agency to allow its members to to keep their positions along with those in local governments. Belgrade daily Politika writes today that Vojvodina’s authorities will try to get the Anti-Corruption Agency to allow the province’s assembly members, elected under the majority system, to keep their seats in the assembly, and their positions in the local government after April 1.

Pajtić expects statute to go into effect

Head of the Vojvodina government Bojan Pajtić said on Friday he expects the Vojvodina statute to go into effect fully in 2010. By the end of 2010, the Vojvodina administration will take over its full powers in all sectors, he told B92 TV.

The residents of Vojvodina will see full implementation of the new statute of the province in the new year. However, some possibilities granted by the act, such as the opening of offices in other regions of Europe, will likely wait until 2011.

DS-SVM dissolve coalition in Vojvodina town

The coalition between the Democratic Party (DS) and the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (SVM) in Subotica ended effectively on Monday. The coalition agreement, however, still exists, reports from Serbia’s northernmost town said. DS is heading its own pre-election coalition there, dubbed “For a European Subotica”.
