Dell, HP Stubbornly Raise Stakes in Bidding War for 3PAR
News Analysis: As Dell and HP keep stacking the cash higher in the bidding war for 3PAR, the question arises: What makes this small enterprise storage company worth it? – As the bidding for storage company 3PAR ratchets higher,
so does one question why are Dell
and HP willing to spend this much money for one fairly small
company?
My first thought was that maybe the two companies just
hate each other. I was having visions of a face-off under the hot Texas

HP Now at $2B in Bidding War with Dell for 3PAR
3PAR received an offer from Dell matching HP’s $1.8 billion bid and accepts it, apparently ending the high-stakes bidding war. But HP isn’t done. – To say that modestly profitable utility storage maker 3PAR is a
company in the right place at the right time would be a massive
understatement.
The Dell versus Hewlett-Packard bidding war for the smallish Fremont, Calif.-based
enterprise storage company took two huge steps only minutes apart…

company for the better part of the last decade, suddenly has a couple
of first-tier suitors interested in an acquisition.
Hewlett-Packard, despite already being loaded with one of the largest
storage product catalogs in the worl…
Fisheries biology: War dividend
The second world war led to a boom in North Sea fish numbers
SOME experiments are hard to conduct. Fisheries biologists are, for example, reasonably confident that creating protected areas in the sea, in which fishing is forbidden, encourages the recovery of those species that stay put in the area. This has worked in several places in the tropics, notably the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, where fish populations in protected zones have doubled in five years. They are less confident, however, that it applies to places where the fish of interest are migratory, as is often the case in temperate-zone fisheries like those of the North Atlantic and its adjacent seas.
Closing such places to fishing in order to find out is politically difficult. But 71 years ago politics did dictate one such closure, and a group of biologists, led by Doug Beare at the European Commission’s Office of Maritime Affairs, has now taken advantage of it. The closure in question was the little matter of the second world war, and Dr Beare and his team have been looking at its effects on the population of cod, haddock and whiting in the North Sea. …
