Opposition leader warns of “provocations”

One of the leaders of Serbia’s opposition, Velimir Ilić, says he learned that the authorities will try to provoke unrest at the forthcoming protest rally. The authorities will “try to repeat the scenario of provocation that took place at the rally in July 2008“, said Ilić, announcing the gathering in Belgrade scheduled for February 5.

The CoE Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) determined that there is almost no effective control over the financing of political parties in Serbia.

Bin Laden warns France to withdraw troops

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on Friday warned France to remove its troops from Muslim lands or else risk the lives of French hostages in Niger. “President Nicolas Sarkozy’s refusal to remove his forces from Afghanistan is nothing but a green light for killing the French hostages,” said the voice, which was attributed to bin Laden, on the new recording aired by television station Al Jazeera.

China warns S. Korea, U.S. over exercises

China has warned America and South Korea not to stage military acts near its coast, ahead of joint naval drills due to start on Sunday in the Yellow Sea.

The U.S. military says the exercises, planned long before last week’s attack by North Korea, are designed to deter Pyongyang and are not aimed at China.

Washington warns allies about WikiLeaks

The United States is notifying foreign governments that the whistleblower website WikiLeaks is about to publish classified U.S. diplomatic documents. U.S. State Department Spokesperson P.J. Singapore central bank warns of overborrowing risks

Singapore banks are well capitalised and household debt is low relative to assets but the current low interest rate environment could lead to excessive borrowing by individuals and firms, the city-state’s central bank warned on Thursday.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in its annual Financial Stability Review also said Singapore banks are well capitalised and should have little difficulty meeting the new Basel III requirements.

MAS warns of risks from capital surge

Singapore’s central bank said on Wednesday that Asia is facing higher risks from a surge of capital inflows, a tide that could reverse in a disorderly fashion if inflationary pressures were not contained.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) issued the warning in its latest macroeconomic review, echoing concerns expressed by policy makers in several emerging Asian economies over hot money that is pushing up regional currencies and stocks.

PML-N warns of long march


LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has maintained that if appointments like NAB chairman were continued to be made, they will be forced to undertake a long march.
He stressed that President Asif Zardari should show some wisdom and not take such decisions. He was addressing a public meeting after inaugurating Watan Cards programme in Khushab on Sunday.
According to him, Pakistan Muslim League-N opposes this decision and will continue to do so. He said he has no personal grudge against Deedar Shah but the matter pertains to justice and bringing back the money looted from the country, whether this money is of Swiss bank accounts, Steel Mills or it is about the illegal loans of millions of rupees given to the directors of Punjab Bank.
Describing the people of Punjab and Sindh, as well as poor masses of the country as talented, he asserted that all the deserving persons including resourceless students, cancer patients, destitute widows and orphans have a right over the 60 million dollars in Swiss banks and it is not the personal property of any individual.
He maintained that appointment of Deedar Shah is tantamount to adding insult to the injuries of the poor as well as promotion of poverty and corruption. He said: It is a slap on the face of justice and a crude attempt to hide corruption. He said President Zardari has given the responsibility of rendering justice to 170 million people to such a controversial person who was People Party MPA twice. He said: “There is a need for utilizing national resources honestly and judiciously for transforming Pakistan into a state as per the ideals of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal.”
Earlier, the CM inaugurated the programme of distribution of Watan Cards among flood affectees. He also enquired about the problems being faced by the flood victims and issued instructions for their solution. Talking to the calamity-stricken people, the CM said though floods have caused a loss of billions of rupees to the provincial economy, Punjab government has not lost the courage and every effort would be made for their rehabilitation.

Pak warns NATO against more incursions


ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has warned that the Pakistan will explore every available option if NATO does not apologise for violation of its territory.
Responding to a point of order in the National Assembly on Friday, Prime Minister Gilani said PakistanÂ’s cooperation with NATO and US in the war on terror does not mean that Pakistan has compromised on its sovereignty. “War on terror is our own war and we are fighting it to curb the menace of terrorism from our country,” Premier Gilani added.
He said the government has raised the issue with NATO in accordance with international principles. “We have discussed it with Senator Kerry and it will also be raised in Brussels,” Prime Minister told the House.
He said Pakistan has intelligence, defence, political and economic cooperation with the US and if the allied forces have any credible information regarding terrorist activities they should share it with Pakistani authorities.
The Prime Minister made it clear that any violation of Pakistani territory is not acceptable and the government will not allow anyone to violate its security and sovereignty.
Earlier, MNA Abdul Qadir Baloch on the point of order urged the parliamentarians to register their protest against NATO attacks, adding that the House should pass a resolution against this violation.
Responding to another point of order, Prime Minister Gilani said government believes in across-the-board transparent accountability and does not believe in political victimization.
He reiterated that the government intends to pass new accountability bill through consensus and it is working to build a consensus among all stakeholders in this regard.
He said during previous regimes NAB was working under the Chief Executive of the country and he himself became its political victim.
“As I did not want an impression of influencing NAB on my part, I better decided to give NAB under the Law Ministry for the sake of justice,” he stated.
Gilani however said as per the law, the President has to consult the leaders of the House and Opposition for the appointment of Chairman NAB. “I, on behalf of the President, have proposed two names to the Opposition Leader on which he has reservations.” He said keeping in view the situation, the government requested the Supreme Court to extend time for appointment of Chairman NAB to complete consultative process for this purpose.
He told the House that no ordinance is promulgated without the permission of the Prime Minister.
Earlier, Mahtab Abbasi on the point of order while quoting a news item expressed his concern over the promulgation of an ordinance designating the powers of Chairman NAB to Law Ministry.

SGX CEO warns of tough competition, need to do better

Singapore Exchange (SGXL.SI), Asia’s second largest bourse operator by market cap, must put in more effort to boost trading volumes as rivals are catching up, CEO Magnus Bocker said in the firm’s annual report.

GIC official warns of oversupply in India hotels, malls

The Government of Singapore Investment Corp’s (GIC) real estate arm warned on Thursday about a looming oversupply of luxury hotels and malls in India although it remained bullish about the country’s longer-term prospects.

“I would probably stay away from luxury hotels because I think there is a huge supply coming… I would also stay away from retail malls in the short term for the same reasons,” GIC Real Estate Deputy President Goh Kok Huat said at a property seminar in Singapore.

UK ambassador warns of “isolation”
