Warren Haynes Christmas Jam :: 12.11.10 :: Asheville Civic Center :: Asheville, NC

This past Saturday Warren Haynes hosted the 22nd Warren Haynes Christmas Jam in his hometown. Joining Haynes and his soulful new solo band were the Gregg Allman Band, Steve Miller Band, Widespread’s John Bell, Umphrey’s McGee and more, all of whom donated their time and talent to a worthy cause. All proceeds from the Christmas Jam will go to Habitat For Humanity. To date, Haynes’ annual event has raised close to $850,000 for the organization.

Find the extensive setlist here. There’s nifty roundup for this year’s event by Scott Bernstein over at Glide, and we’ve got these prime shots from the very talented Mr. Perrucci.

Willie Nelson, Warren Haynes Surprise Fans With Election Calls

?UESTLOVE, WAYNE COYNE, GRACE POTTER, YIM YAMES, AND OTHERS ALSO CALL
FANS

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson, ?uestlove of The Roots, and Wayne Coyne of
the Flaming Lips are among the
dozen musicians involved with the “Pledge to Vote” campaign staged by HeadCount, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes electoral
participation. Each artist recorded reminders that will be sent to fans before Election Day via automated phone calls.
In addition, most artist participants will be making live calls – surprising fans who expect to only hear a pre-
recorded message.

“Let’s get some folks cranked up about this,” said The Grateful Dead‘s Bob Weir, a HeadCount board member who will also be personally calling dozens of
voters. “It’s so important that people, particularly young people, are paying attention and voting so a bunch of
cranky old folks don’t steal their future. Hopefully getting a call from a familiar voice will be motivation.”

Close to 25,000 music enthusiasts have already made a “Pledge to Vote” at concerts or on HeadCount’s website, www.headcount.org, requesting a reminder phone call from
one of their favorite artists and affirming that they will vote in November. The full list of artist choices include:

?uestlove
Adam Gardner (Guster)
Matt Berninger (The National)
Warren Haynes (The Allman Bros., Gov’t Mule)
Marc Brownstein (The Disco Biscuits)
Willie Nelson
Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips)
Grace Potter
Brett Dennen
Bob Weir (Grateful Dead, Furthur)

Jon Fishman (Phish)
Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket)

Fans can still sign up for the calls by visiting www.HeadCount.org/pledge.

Warren Haynes Solo Album Out Spring 2011

ALBUM FEATURES GEORGE PORTER JR, IVAN NEVILLE, IAN MCLAGAN,
RUTHIE FOSTER, & RON
HOLLOWAY

Warren Haynes

Warren Haynes has
revealed details of his upcoming solo album in an interview with Relix.com.

The album will feature Haynes, George Porter Jr on bass, Ivan Neville and Ian McClagan
(The Faces) on keys, vocalist Ruthie Foster, and Ron Holloway on saxophone. Haynes describes
the album as “all original material with one exception, but it sounds like the soul music of the late ‘60s, early ‘70s
blended with Albert King, B.B. King and Freddie King type blues from that same era”.

Says Haynes, “This is a record I’ve waited my whole life to make because soul music was my first love. Before I ever
heard rock
and roll music, I was listening to soul music. Before I picked up a guitar, I was singing—and everything I was
singing was soul music. For me, I think it’s the right time to showcase this side of me. Obviously anybody who’s
followed my career has seen this side of me before—but not to this extent.”

The album is due out Spring 2011.

Gov’t Mule | Red Rocks | Pics

Words & Images by: Mike Hardaker

Gov’t Mule :: 09.04.10 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

Gov’t Mule cranked their amps up to 11 at Red Rocks at the band’s annual end of summer concert, where they were joined by The Avett Brothers and Truth & Salvage Co.. Mule lead singer, guitarist and bandleader Warren Haynes is a master at the guitar, having played with the Allman Brothers Band, The Dead, David Allan Coe and many more talented musicians, not to mention the dozens if not hundreds of musicians he has jammed with over the years. Along with Haynes was the rock solid Matt Abts behind the drum kit, Danny Louis on keyboard and even guitar for a few songs, and new bass player Jorgen Carlsson throwing down at Red Rocks. The first set started out rocking but settled into a mellow groove, if that’s possible for Gov’t Mule. When Haynes came out for the second set, he said, “This is the rock ‘n’ roll portion of the show,” as his guitar cut through the thin Rocky Mountain; a hypnotic sound you can close your eyes and really drift off to. Special guest Eric Krasno (Soulive, Lettuce) added his guitar chops in this set much to the delight of the Colorado crowd.

Gov’t Mule is heading to Oakland for a spooky Halloween show on October 30th, and before that making a stop in Las Vegas with their friends Widespread Panic for an intimate night of music at the Hard Rock’s The Joint on October 23rd .

Setlist
Set I: Railroad Boy > Gameface with Mountain Jam Tease, Patchwork Quilt, Child Of The Earth, Frozen Fear > D’yer Mak’er > Frozen Fear, Kind Of Bird, I’d Rather Go Blind, Soulshine with Gospel Intro, Broke Down On The Brazos
Set II: Steppin’ Lightly, Inside Outside Woman Blues, About To Rage > Electric Funeral Jam > About To Rage, Sco-Mule > with Eric Krasno, Oye Coma Va Tease & Dance To The Music Lyrics, Drums > High Jazz Jam > Endless Parade, Blind Man In The Dark
E: 21st Century Schizoid Man > We’re Not Gonna Take It > Dazed & Confused

Saturday Eye Candy: Bobby Sheehan of Blues Traveler

WE LIGHT A BIRTHDAY CANDLE FOR ONE OF JAM’S LOST SOLDIERS

Original Blues Traveler bassist Bobby Sheehan would have turned 42 today. Sadly, he passed away at just 31 years of age in 1999. JamBase and the community that’s built up around it owe a debt to Sheehan and his bandmates for their efforts in the 1990s to promote and celebrate all things “jam.” We raise a toast to you, Bobby, and the rest of Blues Traveler this weekend.

Blue Traveler performs tomorrow, Sunday, June 13, at Bonnaroo at The Other Tent from 3:00-4:00 pm.

Let’s kick it off with “But Anyway” live on The Soundboy Show.

Traveler was a staple at beloved jam mecca the Wetlands Preserve in NYC. Here they are kicking Charlie Daniels’ ditty around.

It’s easy to forget in these days of Bonnaroo, Wakarusa and myriad other fests, that jam-minded bands didn’t always have it so easy. One major push for the notion of jam rock came from the H.O.R.D.E. tours instigated by Blues Traveler.

Here’s the band in 1994 with guest Warren Haynes.

Since we’re time traveling back to the ’90s, let’s check out this clip from Dennis Miller’s late night show before the conservative demons crawled into his head. Nice vest, dude!

We wrap this small remembrance with a pretty, orchestra fueled version of one of Traveler’s more wistful numbers.

The inaugural Hangout Beach & Music Festival was an eclectic crossroads of Southern culture and the progressive festival scene. The promoters put incredible thought into the lineup to appeal to just about everyone. The wide range of fans and artists combined with the recent events of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, made for an interesting dynamic – ripe seeds of the green movement. Swimming in the 8-foot waves was unforgettable, but on the last day a gas station attendant showed me a tar ball that had washed up on the shore as the spill finally started to make its way to land.

Town-visitor relations could not have been better and the Southern hospitality was warm. Things ran smoothly and peacefully with the community on the white sandy beaches. The promoters pledged to donate their proceeds to the oil cleanup, a generous promise, and the political organization HeadCount was on-site leading a letter writing campaign on the issue.

As the festival went on, the crowd changed from those nearby who just came to check out the scene to more veteran live music lovers. The fans waited out an epic storm and tornado warning on Sunday and prayed for better weather. The grounds closed for a few hours and some performances were canceled, including Matisyahu, who played later that night at a free after party to the first 500 lucky fans. The sky cleared and with some schedule changes, the organizers managed to fit in some of the bigger acts on the bill in the limited time allowed. In the same pithy fashion, here are some of the highlights of the weekend.

Alison Krauss :: Hangout

Best Song Tease:
The first day of the festival featured a high percentage of the local population, with a generous 5000 tickets given out to the local community. Many were unfamiliar with the majority of acts, however, Alison Krauss & Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas appealed to a variety of different people. After a few songs, Krauss stepped off stage leaving Douglas, arguably the world’s best dobro player, to go at it solo. He coasted through a tease of the Duane Allman penned “Little Martha,” while across the beach, Girl Talk played a mash-up of the Grateful Dead’ s “Casey Jones,” creating an unplanned homage to two pioneers of the modern music experience, one from the Deep South and one from freaky San Francisco.

Best collaboration:
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band played a funky New Orleans inspired set that included the sensual charisma of Grace Potter and the superb guitar playing of Warren Haynes. They played an amazing cover of the 1929 Albert E. Brumley bluegrass standard “I’ll Fly Away” and threw Dixie Cup ice cream into the crowd. The band marched off stage through the audience, then back onstage with some enthusiastic dancers from the crowd. They then led a procession up the boardwalk and into the VIP area, where the fun for many had to halt.

Best Dose of Southern Comfort:
The Grammy Award winning Zac Brown Band brought out a sea of meaty, clean cut, good ol’ boys in golf shirts. Brown looks similar to the guitarist Zach Deputy and shares his lightning fast picking style. His lyrics are a cross section of marijuana laced party rock and patriotic southern pride – a seemingly incongruent mix that somehow works. One song even went into a long instrumental jam. Brown played a solemn version of Crosby, Stills and Nash’s “Cost of Freedom,” followed by Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” The presence of the armed forces is ubiquitous in the Deep South, and Brown was cheered on as he spoke about the importance of the military and their role in preserving our way of life.

Best Southern Picking:
Jeff Austin & Friends, including Larry Keel, wowed the crowd with a power trio bluegrass combination. The band played complicated bluegrass with fast picking and complex modulation. The Honey Island Swamp Band gets a honorable mention for some solid electric slide guitar.

Trey Anastasio Band :: Hangout Beach & Music Festival

Best Opportunity to Hook Up with a Southern Belle:
John Legend played soulful tunes until curfew, evoking a young Marvin Gaye. Each song was steamier than the next, set amidst the backdrop of crashing waves and a starry sky. He ended with a soulful, yet somber version of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.”

Best New Jam:
Nashville natives Moon Taxi played the JamBase Stage before it closed on Sunday due to weather. The high energy and virtuosity of this band is not to be missed.

Best Dose of Culture Shock:
Kathleen Kennedy was brought on to introduce the Zach Brown Band. Dressed in the height of hipster fashion, she began talking about preserving the environment, an issue difficult to oppose. Somehow Kennedy managed to ruin a very clear, beautiful message with the pompous attitude of an MTV VJ crossed with a royal bloodline. As she got booed and subsequently escorted off the stage, there were actually two sides of the coin that became apparent. It was appalling and shocking to see Americans so ignorant and uncaring about an issue as vital as clean beaches, yet here was this famous, twenty-something jetting down to Flora-Bama and lecturing folks with not a bit of humility in her voice.

Best Dose of Psychedelia:
Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB opened with a solid version of “Gotta Jibboo” and the set hit its climax early with “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” The Phish tune “Alaska” was subdued but featured the horn section creatively. The set was mostly slow and steady carried by bass player Tony Markellis‘ groove. Trey announced that when he and Tom Marshall found out about the festival, they wrote a song just for the occasion. The fruit of this was a reggae tune called “Sailboat Man.” The song was written in the most common rock arrangement of 1-4-5 (think “Stir It Up” or “Chalk Dust Torture”) and it sounded like it was written in five minutes, but nevertheless, was a thrill.

The set closed with slightly higher energy, including a beautiful version of “Drifting” and Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog.” The choice of “First Tube” for an encore was exciting, but nothing for the record books. Fireworks were set off behind the stage, with bombs bursting in air giving those who traveled just for this show an over the top Southern send off.
