Schmidt, Zuckerberg, Bartz Top All-Star Web 2.0 Summit Lineup

SAN FRANCISCO& The Web 2.0 Summit 2010 boasted no shortage of star power for its keynote conversations hosted by show creators Tim O’Reilly and John Battelle. Google CEO Eric Schmidt kicked things off Nov. 15 by waving around a phone that appeared to be the Nexus S, an Android 2.3 handset allegedly from Samsung. Schmidt discussed a lot more topics and was careful to note that Google is being super careful about privacy. He noted that people have to explain when they’re joking, a reference to some flip comments he’s made that were taken literally. Tuesday, Nov. 16 was the master list of keynotes, including Shantanu Narayen, CEO of Adobe; HP Palm’s Jon Rubinstein, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, and of course, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whose company is arguably the hottest in the world in terms of pre-IPO buzz. Interspersed with this were several other events, including a semantic joust between venture capital whizzes John Doerr from Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byars and Union Square Ventures’ Fred Wilson, who argued over whether ideas or execution matter. But the keynote conversations were also quite spicy, as detailed below in this eWEEK slide show. – …

Data protectionism : Serfing the web

A small spat highlights a big issue: who owns your online identity?

SUCH is Facebook’s attraction these days that even Britain’s monarch has finally joined the 500m-plus users of the online social network. On November 8th Queen Elizabeth II launched a Facebook page to publicise the royal family’s doings. Within a day, it had attracted almost 200,000 “likes” from around the world plus messages such as “Hello Liz xxx”. But it had also turned into a forum for an acrimonious slanging match between supporters of the monarchy and its critics.

Buckingham Palace says that the Queen’s e-mail address, if she has one, is secret. But it will not end in gmail.com. That will spare her from another wrangle—a kind of digital trade war. On November 5th Google introduced a technical change that blocks its e-mail users from automatically transferring their electronic address book in one lump when they set up a Facebook account. It is part of Google’s efforts to defend its dominance of the internet from Facebook’s growing challenge (as is Google’s announcement this week giving all its 23,000 employees a 10% pay rise and a $1,000 bonus, which is an attempt to halt defections to Facebook). …

Opera Gains Extensions and Joins IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome in Web Dev War

The alpha release of the Opera Web browser sets the stage for a Web app battle that is already being fought by Microsoft IE, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome by girding itself with a standards-based framework for adding extensions to the Web browser. Opera also gained a new mail panel, bookmarks bar and HTML5 support and on-demand plug-in enablement. Opera hopes that using W3C Widgets and JavaScript as the base will enable Web developers to write Web applications that can be added to the Opera platform. Opera 11 alpha became available on Oct. 21 and can be downloaded at no cost. Besides extensions, other user-centric convenience features including bookmarks also got a makeover. The mail panel, which is intended to combine e-mail and news feeds, was not implemented in the early alpha version that I tested. To read the full review, click here.
