Grateful Dead: Europe Â’72 Tour Box Set

INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED, LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION

AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT DEAD.NET AND SHIPS IN SEPTEMBER

sketch of new box set

Grateful Dead slipped the
shores of America and crossed the pond for its first-ever major European tour in April 1972. The legendary 22-
show run spawned Europe ’72, a live triple album that remains one of the band’s best-selling and most
beloved releases. A tour this momentous deserves a boxed set of historic proportions and Dead.net has stamped your passport to relive every note from the European tour
with Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings, an individually numbered, limited edition collection
that includes more than 60 discs with over 70 hours of music featuring every show from what is arguably the
Grateful Dead’s greatest tour. The box set ships in September.

Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings is housed in a replica steamer trunk reminiscent of the ones
prevalently used at the time. The travel
chest contains tour memorabilia, a coffee-table book with never-before-seen photos, and a comprehensive essay
by noted Dead author Blair Jackson. Each performance will also be accompanied by an essay specific to
the show written by top Dead scholars including David Gans, Gary Lambert, Nicholas Meriwether, and
Steve Silberman.

Jeffrey Norman, the primary mixer of the Dead’s archival multi-track material for the past 15 years, is
mixing each
show from the original 16-track recordings.

Due to ship in September, the boxed set is available exclusively from Dead.net, which is taking orders now. The
price of the collection is $450, which works out to the remarkably low price of about $20 for each show, or roughly
the cost of a transatlantic flight from New York City to London in 1972 (price of time machine not included).

The first 3,000 fans to order will have
their copy personalized with a name requested by the purchaser. Once the 3,000 order goal is reached by April 1,
Dead.net will continue to take orders through the summer but will limit production of the collection to a maximum
of 7,200 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered. Orders will no longer be taken at some date (to be
determined) later in the summer.

The tour offers a snapshot of a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums—
Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a
year since
the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been
broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as
a member of the touring band.

There was a ton of new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 and during the spring of
’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble On Rose,” “One More
Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen‘s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger
(Two
Souls In Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were
interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar
Magnolia,” “Bertha,” and “Not Fade Away”—and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers—the Europe
’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One,” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat
Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight,” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.”

Geoengineering: Lift-off

Research into the possibility of engineering a better climate is progressing at an impressive rate—and meeting strong opposition

AS A way of saying you’ve arrived, being the subject of some carefully contrived paragraphs in the proceedings of a United Nations conference is not as dramatic as playing Wembley or holding a million-man march. But for geoengineering, those paragraphs from the recent conference of the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Nagoya, Japan, marked a definite coming of age.

Geoengineering is shorthand for the idea of fixing the problem of man-made climate change once the greenhouse gases that cause it have already been emitted into the atmosphere, rather than trying to stop those emissions happening in the first place. Ideas for such fixes include smogging up the air to reflect more sunlight back into space, sucking in excess carbon dioxide using plants or chemistry, and locking up the glaciers of the world’s ice caps so that they cannot fall into the ocean and cause sea levels to rise. …

Dream Theater: “Wither” Video

PROGRESSIVE KINGS CAUGHT IN THE ACT

“Of the 10 videos we’ve done through the years, I felt we have never been truly captured ‘in our element,’ which of course is on tour, playing to our fans, with our lighting and video show. So I thought it was time to do a video that showed us in our ‘real world’ (unlike the ‘fake worlds’ that are usually created when shooting a promo video),” says Mike Portnoy, drummer for Dream Theater, about the band’s new documentary road video for their new single “Wither” from their 10th studio release, Black Clouds & Silver Linings (JamBase review).

Directed by Ramon Boutviseth, who did the same honors for the clip for the album’s first single “A Rite Of Passage,” the “Wither” video was shot on location in the U.K. (London, Manchester), France (Paris, Lille), and Rotterdam (the Netherlands) as part of Dream Theater’s September/October 2009 headlining “Progressive Nation” tour reaching 15 countries (check out JamBase strong review for PN U.S. ’09′s San Jose stop here).

Q&A with Mike Portnoy about the “Wither” video

How do you feel the song’s somber emotional theme works in the context of a documentary tour video? There’s a weariness to the road (the traveling to and from the shows, NOT the onstage moments) that is captured here.

I think this video captures the reality of what it’s really like for us on the road. Sure, the two hours on stage are amazing and ultimately why we do this, but the reality is, there are another 22 hours throughout the day which consists of a lot of traveling, interviews, meet & greets and sometimes a tremendous amount of sitting around and waiting, which sometimes can be very lonely.

What are your thoughts about how the video turned out and how it represents the recent European tour?

I love the final outcome of this video. It really captured the day to day and hour to hour activities that surround a day on the road with Dream Theater, not only for us, but our crew and our fans as well.

Can you talk about the experience of performing overseas and connecting with your fans there?

Touring in Europe and the UK are always some of our best shows and are always among the highlights throughout a World Tour for us. The “Wither” shoot alone captured three amazing audiences and venues for us: The Zenith in Paris, The Ahoy in Rotterdam and Wembley Arena in London – all three of these cities, venues and fans are always favorites of ours!

Very Special Guest Roger Daltrey To Kick Off The Show

Eric Clapton

On the heels of two major U.S. Grammy nominations for his CD release with Steve Winwood last year, Eric Clapton has announced a series of North American solo shows. The band will consist of Steve Gadd on drums, Willie Weeks on bass, Chris Stainton and Walt Richmond on keyboards, and Michelle John and Sharon White as backing vocalists.

Gerrard pulls out of England game

Ben Foster

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has withdrawn from the England squad for Wednesday’s friendly against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

The 26-year-old picked up a knock during Sunday’s FA Community Shield defeat by Chelsea.

Manchester City’s Joe Hart – currently on loan at Birmingham City – has been called up as a replacement.

First-choice goalkeeper David James was left out of the squad by coach Fabio Capello because of a knee injury.

In James’ absence, Capello selected West Ham United’s Robert Green and Blackburn Rovers’ Paul Robinson, who will now compete with Hart to play at the Amsterdam Arena.

Foster has played twice for England, the first in the 1-0 defeat against Spain in February 2007 and the second as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 win over Slovakia in March this year.

"England has no decent keeper. this is an area of concern for our world cup chances"

RockingTheJoint

He is expected to be first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester United in the absence of regular number one Edwin Van der Sar, who will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a broken finger and bone in his left hand.

Foster started the Community Shield match against Chelsea on Sunday, but was unable to prevent United losing 4-1 on penalties.

Following seven successive qualifying wins, England are on the cusp of qualifying for the World Cup next summer in South Africa, while the Dutch, who have also notched up seven victories, are assured of a place in the 2010 finals.

After playing the Netherlands, Capello’s England face Slovenia in a friendly on 5 September, before facing Croatia in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on 9 September.

England squad for 12 August friendly against the Netherlands:

England will host 2015 World Cup

Wembley Stadium

England are favourites to be awarded the right to stage the 2015 Rugby World Cup on Tuesday.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) will announce the hosts of the 2015 and 2019 events in Dublin.

England are being heavily tipped to land the event after the competition’s organisers recommended their bid to the IRB council.

South Africa, Japan and Italy are also in contention for 2015, with Japan being recommended as hosts for 2019.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) claims England would lay on the biggest World Cup to date, generating a surplus at least £60m bigger than that of the other bids.

It says three million people would watch the games live at stadiums that would include Wembley, Anfield, Old Trafford and Twickenham.

The RFU also hopes to stage matches at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, even though Wales would not be co-hosts for the tournament.

To be successful, England must win at least 14 votes from the 24-strong IRB council. The bid received a major boost last month when they were declared as the preferred bidder of Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL), the body inside the IRB which organises the tournament.

Japan, aiming to be the first Asian country to host the Rugby World Cup, narrowly lost out to New Zealand in the voting for the 2011 event.

RWCL believe that having the World Cup in England would generate sufficient revenue to allow the IRB to take it into the emerging market of Japan four years later.

"I think we have done everything we could. But our campaign will continue until midnight in the hotel bar on Monday," said Nobby Mashimo, Japan’s bid chief.

In the past, Rugby World Cup votes have been blighted by accusations of horse-trading, with claims that nations have swapped votes for the right to stage lucrative matches.

England was a co-host of the tournament in 1991 and 1999, while South Africa won the event on home soil in 1995.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown says the 2015 Rugby World Cup would form part of a "golden decade" of sport in the UK, sandwiched between the 2012 Olympics and the football World Cup, which the Football Association is hopeful of bringing to English soil in 2018.</p

Google view of Millennium Stadium

Millennium Stadium

A 360-degree virtual tour of the Millennium Stadium is to be featured on Google Street View.

The Cardiff venue is one of six places voted to be specially filmed by the search engine’s mobile mapping service.

The images of the 74,500-seat venue, both inside and out, will be gathered by a team using a three-wheeled cycle.

Other sites to be mapped are: the Angel of the North, Loch Ness, Stonehenge, the Eden Project, Warwick Castle and Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.

Cardiff is already one of 25 British towns and cities with street-level images available on Google Street View, launched in April this year.

The Millennium Stadium was a winner in the online campaign launched by Google and the travel and tourism body VisitBritain asking the public to name their top tourist treasures.

The venue marks its 10th anniversary this year, with managers saying it it has brought over £1bn to the Welsh economy and supported 2,400 jobs.

Google trike and rider

It attracts over 1m visitors a year, almost half of them from outside Wales, by hosting the Six Nations rugby tournament, concerts by rock and pop giants ranging from U2, Bruce Springsteen to Oasis and Madonna as well as speedway, rugby league, rallying and monster truck racing.

The stadium also held the FA Cup finals and semi-finals while Wembley was being rebuilt.

Communications officer, John Williams, said the stadium was a "jewel in the crown of a proud nation".

He said: "Whether the stadium is in use for a rock or pop concert, hosting a major sporting event or conference, being used as a film set for shows like Doctor Who and Torchwood or even as a frequent backdrop to TV news items – in any one of its many guises – the versatile, retractable roofed- venue dominates its surroundings and remains instantly recognisable.

Face-blurring

Google said it had despatched the Google Street View Trike, an 18 stone (115 kg) machine with a camera mounted on pole behind the rider.

The trike is designed to make imagery collections in places less accessible by cars, such as historic landmarks and coastal paths.

Google said it would apply its face-blurring and licence plate blurring policy to the images, which will be made available at a later date in Street View on Google Maps.

Snowdon, Ben Nevis and the Giant’s Causeway were also said to be three popular suggestions but Google took the view these would be "just too tricky" for someone to ride the trike.</p
