Police dog handler to be prosecuted
Conviction for unnecessary suffering carries penalty of up to six months in jail and £20,000 fine
A police dog handler who left two alsatians to die in a car during the recent heatwave could face up to six months in jail and a £20,000 maximum fine after the RSPCA confirmed today it would prosecute the case.
The animal welfare organisation said the unnamed officer would be charged with causing unnecessary suffering to the animals, which were left in a vehicle outside Nottinghamshire police headquarters on 30 June, yards from new £300,000 kennels housing the force’s dog unit.
Temperatures that day reached 28C in Nottingham and by the time the handler returned to the car the dogs had died.
“The RSPCA can confirm that following the deaths of two police dogs in Nottinghamshire on 30 June legal proceedings will be brought against a Nottinghamshire police officer for causing unnecessary suffering to the two animals,” an RSPCA spokesman said.
A magistrates court summons is due to be served against the officer after the case was assessed by the charity’s prosecution department, the spokesman said. A conviction under the Animal Welfare Act would mean the handler could be banned from keeping animals.
Nottinghamshire police said the officer, who has been on compassionate leave, had been suspended. “An internal inquiry is also continuing,” a spokeswoman said.
The RSPCA said it received about 200 calls a day about dogs in hot cars or gardens without shade during the heatwave three weeks ago. The police officer’s case is the only prosecution to result, the spokesman said.
It is understood the two dogs lived with their handler, who was described as experienced by colleagues.
Nottinghamshire police only recently started breeding its own dogs and the animals that died were given to the force by the Dog Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity.
After news of the deaths emerged, chief superintendent Ak Khan said the officer concerned was “absolutely devastated” by what happened.
The RSPCA said at least three other dogs had died after being left in cars during the heatwave, two in the Highlands and one in West Sussex. It took only 20 minutes for dogs to die in a car during hot weather as temperatures could exceed 40C.
The RSPCA’s chief veterinary adviser, Mark Evans, said: “Leaving your dog in a car, even on an average warm, even cloudy summer day, can put your pet at huge risk of suffering and even death.”This is not a new warning, but sadly too many people still don’t appreciate how dangerous it can be to leave a dog in a hot car, conservatory or caravan.”
App-stinence: purity ring application available for iPhone

A UK software developer has released a "purity ring" application for Apple’s iPhone.
Users can take a purity pledge – a promise to refrain from sex until marriage – and then display a spinning purity ring graphic on the phone.
The application goes on sale at the official App Store for £0.59 ($0.99).
Wall Entertainment, the firm behind the application, said it was taking an old idea and applying it to a new technological medium.
"It’s a novel application," the company’s director, Henry Bennett told the BBC.
"Kids are engaging with their phones in a way their parents never did, so this is a way of them showing they have taken the pledge."
Started in the US, the Silver Ring Thing (SRT) is the organisation behind the purity ring symbol and was founded by Denny and Amy Pattyn in 1996.
It was their response to what they saw as a worrying rise in the number of pregnancies among teenage girls.
In the UK, SRT is based in West Sussex and run by a group of volunteers.
But Mr Bennett said there was – for now – no link between SRT and the iPhone purity ring.
"We’ve contacted the SRT to let them know about our app and we’re now waiting to see whether they will endorse this product."
While there are millions of people who have taken the purity pledge in the US, in Britain the figure is far smaller.
Mr Bennett said that they were waiting for sales figures from the Apple App Store, but said it would be "interesting" to see how well it sells in America.</p

Airport passenger numbers fall 5.9%
• 12.7m passengers pass through company’s seven airports
• Lowest figure for nine months
• Edinburgh bucks the trend
The number of travellers using major UK airports declined to its lowest level for nine months in June, BAA said today.
The airport operator said a total of 12.7m passengers passed through its airports last month, a reduction of 5.9% on the same period last year.
But the firm, which saw a 7.3% fall in May, said this was the best underlying figure since last September.
BAA had posted a 2.3% decline in passenger numbers in April but this rose to 6.8% when the effect of a late Easter was stripped out.
Heathrow recorded a comparatively modest fall of 3.1% because of its large number of transfer flights.
Stansted, the base for several low-cost carriers including Ryanair and easyJet, was the worst affected airport, falling 11.5%.
In the six months to June 2009, the Essex airport is down 14.4%, compared with the same period last year, as carriers have slashed capacity at the airport.
Domestic traffic was down 8.1% in June, European scheduled flight passengers were reduced by 2.8% and travellers on North Atlantic routes were 9.4% lower.
Long-haul flights were the most resilient sector, almost flat on last year at a 0.2% reduction.
Edinburgh was the only airport to register an increase in traveller numbers, at 1.4% – its third month of growth.
Gatwick had 7.6% fewer passengers in June, while Glasgow and Aberdeen dropped 10.9% and 9.8% respectively.
BAA is embroiled in a battle against the Competition Commission’s decision to make it sell three of its airports.
The commission ruled earlier this year that BAA’s ownership of seven UK airports was anti-competitive and ordered the firm to sell Gatwick and Stansted airports as well as either Glasgow or Edinburgh.
BAA had already decided to sell Gatwick in West Sussex and said last month the sale process was continuing.
