The Greek parliament has ratified Serbia’s Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with the European Union, the Greek embassy in Belgrade announced today.
Greek Ambassador to Serbia Dimostenis Stoidis pointed out that the ratification is a practical expression of the commitment with which Greece has supported Serbia’s EU membership, as part of its Agenda 2014 initiative, designed to accelerate the European integration of the countries in the Western Balkans.

EU official to visit Albania
Head of the European External Action Service (EEAS) for Russia, Eastern Neighborhood and the Western Balkans Miroslav LajÄak will visit Albania today.
LajÄak is coming to Albania in order to find a solution for the country’s political crisis.
EU enlargement promise “alive”
Luxembourg FM Jean Asselborn says the EU “plans to keep its promise regarding the Western Balkans’ EU perspective despite the current economic crisis”. This, Asselborn explained, taking into account that the region’s admission to the union “represents a peace project”.
New EU presidency and Balkans
Hungary has taken over at the helm of EU’s rotating six-month presidency and outlined its priorities. The union’s enlargement to the Western Balkans countries was included as “an important item”, Beta news agency reports, and adds that this comes despite the fact that Hungary is aware there is resistance to enlargement within the organization.
Hungary to take over EU presidency
Hungary will take over from Belgium on January 1, 2011, as the country presiding over the EU rotating 6-month presidency. When it comes to the Western Balkans, Belgian FM Steven Vanackere says his country is satisfied with the results, and noted it support the start of producing the EC opinion on Serbia’s readiness to submit its application in order to obtain candidate status.
Greek FM: Serbia in EU in 2018
Foreign ministers of Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece expressed support to the EU integration of the Western Balkans at a trilateral meeting in Sofia on Saturday.
Bulgarian FM Nikolay Mladenov, Serbian FM Vuk Jeremić and Greek FM Dimitris Droutsas also adopted a joint declaration on the European future of the region.
FM: EU accession date to be set in 2014
Serbian FM Vuk Jeremić says that a date for EU accession of the countries of the region could be set at EU-Western Balkans summit in Thessaloniki in 2014.
He told ANA news agency that EU accession was Serbia’s strategic priority.
Western Balkans rife with pessimism
Citizens of the Western Balkans countries are still pessimistic, despite the fact that there is a general improvement compared to last year.
The reason for that is the difficult economic situation, shows the latest European Fund for the Balkans survey, conducted in cooperation with Gallup.
Foreign minister to visit Finland
Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić will visit Finland on Monday, October 18, at the invitation of Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb. Stubb and Jeremić will discuss bilateral relations between Finland and Serbia as well as Serbian accession to the EU and regional issues of the Western Balkans, including Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Fuele: Good neighborly relations before EU
EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele thinks that countries of the Western Balkans should establish good neighborly relations before joining the EU.
“There is a series of challenges in the Balkans that must be solved on a regional level,†he said.
“Parliament plays role in fighting poverty”
In the fight against poverty and social exclusion in the Western Balkans, national parliaments play an important role. They introduce EU standards into the countries’ legal systems, a conference gathering parliamentary committees on poverty reduction from the Western Balkans and Turkey heard on Tuesday in Belgrade.
Tadić: Serbia committed to Dayton
Serbia remains committed to the Dayton agreement, Serbian President Boris Tadić stated. He stressed that Serbia would continue to protect and respect the legitimate rights of Serbs and all nations who live in the Western Balkans, as well as the sovereignity and territorial integrity of all countries in the region.
Deputy PM: No EU without Kosovo status
Deputy Prime Minister Božidar Äelić said that Serbia could not joint the EU until the status of Kosovo was solved. “It’s not possible for the entire Western Balkans to enter the EU with the issue of Kosovo, including its status, not solved,“ he told B92.
International Day of Disappeared marked
International Day of the Disappeared was marked on Sunday in Serbia and around the world.
Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Regional Delegation for the Balkans Paul Henry Arni stated on the occasion that both the families of the missing persons and this humanitarian organization are not at all satisfied with the dynamics of solving cases of the persons who went missing during the armed conflicts in Western Balkans.
“Bosnia could apply for EU this year”
Bosnia-Herzegovina FM Sven Alkalaj stated on Thursday that, by the end of this year, this country could submit the application for EU candidate status.
“During September or October at the latest, we expect defining of EU foreign policy, which implies the introduction of a special EU representative for the Western Balkans. The implementation of such a policy would make it possible for our country to apply for the candidate status, without fulfilling the conditions 5+2,” Alkalaj told to daily OsloboÄ‘enje.
EC on Serbian budget revision
Signs of economic recovery in the Western Balkans are “scarce,” except for the somewhat better situation in Serbia, the European Commission said. Domestic demand is low, unemployment is at the same level, and “the consequence of all this is strong pressure on state finances in several regional countries,” it was stated in the Commission’s internal report in Brussels, which Beta news agency was given access to.
Croat president: Belgrade, Priština to turn to dialogue
Croatian President Ivo Josipović said that all countries of the Western Balkans must join the EU, and called on Belgrade and Priština to begin cooperating.
After the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Kosovo, Josipović said that the way to solve relations between Belgrade and Priština is through EU integration.
Athens “ready to support stability in Balkansâ€

The statement comes in response to the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilaterally proclaimed independence.
President Tadić on EU bid, ICJ decision
Serbian President Boris Tadić has stated that he expects Serbia’s EU integration to be “accelerated” in the fall. Speaking in the northern town of Zrenjanin today, Tadić said that he believed Serbia and the Western Balkans must join the EU “a lot sooner than 2020″, so that the European integration plan would be sustainable and the region’s stability preserved.
Slovenia adopts declaration on W. Balkans
Slovenia’s parliament has adopted a declaration on the Western Balkans which aims to strengthen relations and cooperation with the countries in the region. The declaration represents a framework of guidelines for Slovenia’s actions in the Western Balkans which was adopted by the government earlier this month.
