Intel is launching its new six-core “Westmere EP” Xeon processors, and system makers such as IBM, HP, Dell, SGI, Cray and Super Micro are rolling out new and enhanced systems powered by the new chips. The Westmere EP launch comes as Intel prepares to release an eight-core Xeon and AMD readies its 12-core Opteron.

Intel Readies Six-Core ‘Westmere’ Server Chip
At the ISSCC show next week, Intel officials will talk about their upcoming 32-nm “Westmere” processors for servers and clients, including a six-core version for two-socket servers and high-end desktops. Intel is looking to refresh its entire server lineup, not only with Westmere processors but also with the upcoming Nehalem EX chip and the next-generation Itanium processor, called “Tukwila.” AMD and IBM also are getting ready to release new server products.

‘Jasper Forest,’ 32-nm ‘Westmere’ on Intel Agenda for IDF
During Intels three-day Intel Developer Forum, key agenda items will be the new “Nehalem”-based chips for the embedded and storage sectors, code-named “Jasper Forest.” Also on tap will be reports on “Westmere,” Intels processors built via the 32-nm manufacturing process. Westmere chips are on schedule for revenue production starting in the fourth quarter, giving Intel a lead over rival AMD, which isnt expected to roll out its first 32-nm chips until 2010.

‘Westmere` to Be a Focus of IDF
Intels upcoming 32-nanometer “Westmere” processor, aimed at desktops and notebooks, will be a key topic of discussion at the Intel Developer Forum in September, according to an Intel blog. The six-core chip will include such features found in the 45-nm “Nehalem” chips as Turbo Boost, as well as improved virtualization capabilities. Some of the chips also will have hyperthreading capabilities, enabling them to process two instruction threads simultaneously.
