Ekahau Mobile Survey Delivers Promising WiFi Survey Tool to Android Phones and Tablets
Ekahau Mobile Survey delivers a nice mix of WiFi stumbling tools and performance measurement to Android-based smartphones and tablets, supporting many Android devices running Android OS 2.1 or higher. Mobile Survey ($299) is sold through the Ekahau Web store, rather than the Android Market, so the device to be used with Mobile Survey must support non-Market application sources. The software performs both active and passive WiFi scans with the ability to measure detected network performance against multicriteria templates tailored for specific network use cases. Unfortunately, Mobile Survey is hampered because most Android smartphones don’t support 5 GHz 802.11n and only have a single transmit/receive chain, even though the software claims to be able to handle the higher frequency band and better antenna configurations. AirMagnet Survey Pro 8.0 Uses Two Sensors to Speed WiFi Survey and Planning
AirMagnet Survey Pro 8.0 delivers multiadapter support, allowing administrators or WiFi consultants to complete surveys faster and cheaper by conducting passive and active surveys at the same time. Wireless implementers can also perform iPerf bandwidth measurements during a survey, sampling real network performance from the field and viewing those results in a heat map, getting a better understanding of how 802.11n technologies such as MIMO (multiple input, multiple output), spatial multiplexing, and beamforming affect real performance results. New reporting tools also allow administrators to customize the look and contents of reports generated by Survey Pro to better suit WiFi objectives or initiatives. Survey Pro 8.0 costs $3,995, but customers using previous versions of Survey Pro that have an up-to-date support contract may upgrade to the new version for free. By enabling support for multiple sensors and delivering a new analysis module, AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer Pro 9.0 now analyzes WiFi client roaming behavior, adding the ability to monitor three channels at the same time without missing any WiFi packets. Unfortunately, current design limitations mean wireless administrators can’t scan with one adapter while monitoring static channels with the other sensors. AirMagnet, a Fluke Networks company, started shipping Analyzer PRO 9.0 this month for $3,995. Analyzer PRO 9 is also available as a free upgrade to current customers with an active support contract. Toktumi Line2 for iPhone Delivers VOIP and SMS over WiFi When ATandT Fails
Line2 from Toktumi, a VOIP (voice over IP) app for Apple iPhone, delivers outstanding voice quality and good SMS text messaging capability to the iOS smartphone. Leveraging either WiFi or 3G data services to deliver its calling services, Line2 provides a full second mobile telephone line to iPhone users for those all-too-common times when the AT&T network fails to serve and promises unlimited calling and texting within the United States and Canada. Users may find the $10-per-month cost slightly prohibitive, given Line2 service works only on the iPhone, not on a PC, Mac or other device. However, the application is free to download from the Apple App Store and it comes with a 30-day trial to test out the service. Also, Toktumi offers a more complete hosted PBX service to use with multiple devices, with a price starting at $15 a month.
