Chip Shot: BSNL Unwires WiMAX in rural India

BSNL launched India’s first commercial WiMAX service on December 13 to begin bringing mobile broadband connectivity to rural India. Analysts predict India will be the biggest base on earth for WiMAX by 2012. Besides high-speed broadband Internet access, rural citizens can benefit from e-government services including bill payment, vehicle registration and issuance of birth certificates, as well as telemedicine, tele-education and banking services.

WiMax subscribers are expected to reach 2 million by the end of the year, but deployments are a mixed picture, says a new report from ABI, and growth is coming just as LTE begins to compete for customers.

Having opened 10 more markets across four states, WiMax broadband provider Clearwire is now operating in 27 U.S. markets covering more than 30 million people.

Clearwire Communications continues it aggressive national WiMax rollout with a Philadelphia debut. The rollout is part of Clearwire’s plan to bring wireless 4G service to 80 markets covering up to 120 million people by the end of 2010.
– Clearwire Communications announced Nov. 5 it has extended service for
its WiMax 4G wireless service to Philadelphia. Clearwire, which markets
its service as Clear, said the Philadelphia service area covers 1,000
square miles and approximately 3.6 million people in the market.

WiMax Rollout Hits Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth

Despite its struggles, Sprint continues to push wireless 4G WiMax service with official launches in Chicago and Dallas-Fort Worth along with three markets in North Carolina. By the end of 2009, Sprint promises WiMax rollouts in Honolulu, Seattle, San Antonio and Austin, Texas.

WiMAX Subscribers Reach 4 Million Worldwide

WiMAX subscriptions continue to grow, hitting approximately four million strong in the second quarter of 2009, according to a new report. Of the operators committed to competitor LTE, 37 percent are planning 2010 rollouts.

Chip Shot: WiMAX Brings City-Wide Wireless Internet to NMU Students

Northern Michigan University students in Marquette, MI. will begin receiving 3,000 laptops with WiMAX cards starting Aug. 20. The students, two-thirds of whom live off campus, will have wireless access anywhere in Marquette without additional cost. The school is one of the first universities in the world with a WiMAX network, which delivers cable and DSL-like speed via a wireless network that can cover entire cities and neighborhoods. As a key contributor to the deployment, Intel was on campus for today’s public demonstration of the network.

Clearwire Adds Huawei as WiMax Vendor

Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies joins Motorola, Samsung, Cisco Systems and DragonWave as equipment providers for Clearwire’s WiMax network.

WiMAX continues to build momentum in the U.S. with the recent addition of Atlanta and Las Vegas to the Clearwire line-up of citywide 4G wireless broadband networks. Overseas, the technology is growing at a rapid pace according to a new report from Infonetics Research, which concludes that WiMAX is gaining traction in countries such as India, Russia and Brazil.
