Winter Storms Underscore Need for Real World Emergency Preparation

News Analysis: Emergency planning advice usually assumes that things will work as planned. The real secret to emergency planning is to assume that nothing will work as planned. – It’s no secret that those of us who work on the U.S. East
Coast have been subjected to a cycle of major winter storms that have hit about
every four to six days. The Midwest has had a similar
cycle that seems to alternate between the upper and lower Midwest.
As those storms hit with blizzard…

I would like to do something special for World Cup: Gautam Gambhir

gautam_gambhir_indiaWhen Gautam Gambhir was dropped from the 2007 World Cup squad, he was so disappointed that he almost quit cricket. As he makes his World Cup debut at home, one of the world’s most exciting opening batsmen says he would like to do something “special” for the home crowd, “like my unbeaten 150 against Sri [...]

Islam and demography: A waxing crescent

Islam is growing. But ageing and slowing. That will change the world

ARE Muslims taking over the world, or at a minimum, transforming Europe into Eurabia? Whatever your hopes or fears for the future of the world’s religions, a report published this week has plenty to stoke them. “The Future of the Global Muslim Population”, produced by the Pew Research Centre, a non-profit outfit based in Washington, DC, reckons Muslim numbers will soar from 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.2 billion by 2030. In other words, from 23.4% to 26.4% of the global total.

At the heart of its analysis is the ongoing effect of a “youth bulge” which peaked in 2000. In 1990 Islam’s share of the world’s youth was 20%; in 2010, 26%. In 2030 it will be 29% (of 15-to-29-year-olds). But the Muslim world is slowly heading towards paunchiness: the median age in Muslim-majority countries was 19 in 1990. It is 24 now, and will be 30 by 2030. (For French, Germans and Japanese the figure is 40 or over.) This suggests Muslim numbers will ultimately stop climbing, but later than the rest of the world population. …

Mercedes-Benz World

I visited ‘Mercedes-Benz World’ at Brooklands, in Surrey, last week. Think mega-dealer, museum, theme park crossover. It’s a kind of ‘brand cathedral’ – well, a mini one compared with what they have in Stuttgart, but it’s still pretty impressive.

It’s right next to the Brooklands Museum, so if you are ever planning a visit for a browse, you could easily combine the two.

While I was there they let us have a go on the ‘AMG Experience’ and that was well worth putting an hour aside for. Most fun I have had this year and you just can’t get bored with the traction control off and 6.2 litre-V8 power going through the rear wheels on the wet skid circle.

The events listing caught my eye, too. I quite fancy the ‘Last Night of the Brooklands Proms’; might be fun on a summer evening after a few glasses of vino. If they have fireworks too, I’m going for definite and dusting off the Union Jack jacket. I’m not so sure about the ‘Disco Symphonic Spectacular’…

One thing though. I’d love to know how much M-B World has cost and what the view is inside Daimler HQ on the benefits it has brought to the Mercedes brand in the UK. It’s a long game, I guess. And it is also something that BMW doesn’t have in this market. Is BMW bothered?

Schumpeter: Nipping at their heels

Firms from the developing world are rapidly catching up with their old-world competitors

IT IS remarkable how soon the idea that firms from emerging economies pose a serious threat to multinationals from the rich world has become old hat. “The novelty has become the norm,” concludes the latest annual report on these “new challengers” by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). But familiarity does not make that threat any less real.

Five years ago, when BCG first reported on the rising stars of the developing world, the rich world was still reeling from the shock of the purchase of IBM’s personal-computing business by Lenovo, a Chinese company. That this acquisition proved something of a dud may comfort those in the old guard who suspect that the ambitions of these newcomers to enter the global stage exceed their ability to perform. Yet it has not diminished those ambitions. After a brief fall following the financial crisis of 2008, the number and size of cross-border acquisitions by the challengers rebounded strongly in 2010. In the past decade 60% of the foreign purchases by these developing-country multinationals have been of companies in the rich world; in the past two years the proportion was 70%. …
