Macworld Shows Off a Slew of Creative, Colorful New Products

Some 270 Apple products vendors& the highest number in the 27-year history of the Macworld Expo& and upwards of 20,000 attendees were on hand Jan. 27 for the three-day event at Moscone West in San Francisco. That is, all except Apple itself, which is MIA for the second year. Macworld President Paul Kent told eWEEK that about one-third of the vendors and half the attendees are new to the event this year, a clear indicator that Apple is reaching new stature in the world market with the iPhone 4 and iPad products it released in 2010. On the show floor, a flurry of color and activity could be found on Day 1, with new music-, photo- and storage-related products; an iPad-connected smart-card reader; a Macintosh-run PBX phone system; a clever write-on-paper, show-on-screen classroom system for teachers; and a video-sharing application for iPhones and iPads. Entertainment this year includes comedian Sinbad and Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudness, who will demo his Morphwhiz music application, which is an iPad synthesizer he uses in live performances. Bank of Singapore says yuan may appreciate 6% a year: Update

Investors should buy yuan-denominated assets or open yuan deposit accounts because the Chinese currency may appreciate by as much as 6% a year, according to Bank of Singapore.

“If anything is close to certain it’s that the renminbi will appreciate,” Head of Product Development Marc van de Walle said at a media briefing in Singapore today, using the yuan’s alternative name. “It’s got the potential to appreciate between 4% and 6% annually, and maybe even a bit faster,” he said, without providing a specific time frame.

Serbian currency strongest this year

The Serbian dinar (RSD) gained 42 paras in value against the euro on Thursday, setting the official middle exchange rate at RSD 104.1572. This is the highest value for the Serbian currency so far this year.

Bank of Singapore says yuan has scope to appreciate 4%-6% a year

Bank of Singapore, the private banking business of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp., recommends that investors get into yuan-denominated assets and said the Chinese currency has the potential to appreciate by between 4% and 6% annually, the bank’s head of product management Marc van de Walle told reporters in Singapore today.

Singapore December manufacturing output up 9% on year

Singapore’s manufacturing output grew at a sharply slower-than-expected pace in December as most segments logged tepid expansion and benefits of a lower base of comparison from last year started to wear off.

SIA Engineering off 1.0%; 4Q results in-line – OCBC

SIA Engineering (S59.SG) off 1.0% at $4.18 after it posts 3Q revenue at $269.5 million, +11.6% on year and down 2.7% on quarter with net profit of $60.3 million, +7.7% on year and down 9.3% on quarter.

Despite the sequential declines, selling is light with only 116,000 shares traded, as the results were largely within expectations.

Sands Singapore scraps Chinese New Year leave policy

Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s Singapore casino reversed a policy that would have penalized staff who took sick leave over the Chinese New Year holiday.

Marina Bay Sands scrapped a plan to give demerit points to staff who failed to show up for work even if they had a medical certificate, according to an e-mailed statement from the company. The Straits Times reported the policy earlier today, citing a memo dated Jan. 21.

Java, Python, Apex, Windows Top List of IT Skills in Demand This Year

Thinking about brushing up on your technology skills to remain competitive in the marketplace? While its no secret that experience matters, in this challenging job market, it helps to look at which skills are bringing in the most dollars before deciding which technology to focus on. Singapore December CPI above expectations; +4.6% on year

Singapore December CPI was +4.6% on year, compared with November’s +3.8% and the +4.5% tipped by a Dow Jones poll of economists. The rise was fueled by higher prices for transport, housing and food, government data show.

Inflation is likely to be the biggest worry for the MAS in 2011; the result is likely to fuel increased expectations for the central bank to tighten policy at its April review, for the third-straight time.
