Ukraine’s Tymoshenko to fight poll defeat in court

“Yanukovich is not our president,” declared Ukraine’s Yulia Tymoshenko in a defiant televised message on Saturday. Tymoshenko believes she was cheated out of the job in last weekend’s election. And, in her first real public appearance since being narrowly beaten by her rival Viktor Yanukovich, the prime minister vowed to contest the result in court.

Ukrainians are voting in a presidential election run-off, after a bruising campaign and warnings of mass street protests and demonstrations. PM Yulia Tymoshenko and opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych are competing for the top job after President Viktor Yushchenko lost out in the first round.

Kiev should build relations with Moscow on principles of equality without sacrificing national interests, which would require a “resetting,” says Ukraine’s PM. Yulia Tymoshenko said leading countries “have declared a policy of resetting relations with Russia” and that Ukraine should also “build a harmonious and balanced relationship with our largest neighbor in an honest and transparent way.”
